A roar erupted inside UW Field House today — not from a game-winning spike, but from a surprise announcement that has electrified Badger Nation: Pete Waite, the legendary former head coach of Wisconsin Badgers Women’s Volleyball, is officially returning to the program as Senior Coaching Advisor.

“This is bigger than a championship point,” said Badgers fan and UW alum Jessica Cramer. “Pete Waite coming back? That’s history walking back through the doors.”

A Coaching Icon Returns Home

Waite, who led the Badgers from 1999 to 2012, is widely regarded as one of the architects of Wisconsin volleyball’s rise to national prominence. During his tenure, the team claimed multiple Big Ten titles, reached a national championship match, and built the foundation that today’s powerhouse program stands on.

In his new role as Senior Coaching Advisor, Waite will serve alongside current head coach Kelly Sheffield, providing mentorship, strategic input, and program development support.

“Pete is a true legend,” said Sheffield during the press conference. “He’s part of the DNA of this program, and to have his wisdom back in the gym — it’s like bringing a Hall of Fame mind into every huddle.”

A Surprise Moment That Rocked the House

The announcement came during a preseason open practice at the Great UW Field House. With the crowd expecting a standard team scrimmage, the arena lights dimmed, and a tribute video to Waite’s career played on the Jumbotron. When the lights came back up, Waite stepped onto the court to thunderous applause — and more than a few tears from longtime fans.

“I never stopped loving this team, this school, or this sport,” Waite said, visibly moved. “I’m not here to relive the past — I’m here to support a future that’s even brighter.”

Generations of Badgers Celebrate

Current and former players flooded social media with celebratory posts, calling Waite’s return a “full circle moment” and praising his leadership style — one built on trust, toughness, and unity.

Volleyball alumnae, including several now playing professionally or coaching themselves, credited Waite for shaping them as athletes and people.

“Pete Waite built this house,” said one former captain. “And now he’s back to help protect it.”

Looking Forward

The Badgers, perennial contenders and recent NCAA finalists, are already one of the most respected programs in collegiate volleyball. With Waite now serving as Senior Coaching Advisor, fans and analysts alike believe the team’s leadership just got even stronger.

Waite will work closely with the coaching staff on player development, recruiting, and team culture, while also mentoring younger staff and serving as a bridge between generations of Badger greatness.

In Summary

Pete Waite is back — and the Badger family is whole again.

His return to the University of Wisconsin as Senior Coaching Advisor is more than a headline. It’s a symbol of tradition, excellence, and the unbreakable bond between a coach, his team, and the community that never forgot him.
