The announcement was made early Tuesday morning by Sabres General Manager Kevyn Adams, just hours before the team hit the ice for their first preseason training session.
“This is a full-circle moment not just for Lindy, but for the entire Sabres community,” Adams said in a press conference. “His leadership, experience, and deep understanding of our culture make him the perfect fit to help mentor our coaching staff and young players as we continue building a championship-caliber team.”
Ruff, who coached the Sabres from 1997 to 2013, is remembered as one of the most iconic figures in team history. During his 15-year tenure behind the bench, he led Buffalo to four Eastern Conference Finals and the unforgettable 1999 Stanley Cup Final run.
Now 65, Ruff returns after recent stints with the New Jersey Devils and other coaching roles around the league. His new role will see him working closely with Head Coach Don Granato, player development teams, and front-office leadership.
“It feels like coming home,” Ruff told reporters. “Buffalo’s always been in my heart, and I’m honored to have the chance to help shape the next generation of Sabres hockey.”
Fans have already begun flooding social media with emotional messages, photos, and even plans for a “Welcome Back, Lindy” night when the season officially kicks off at KeyBank Center.
With high expectations riding on a promising young roster, the Sabres hope that Ruff’s return adds the wisdom and fire needed to break their playoff drought and restore the franchise’s once-feared reputation.
Could this be the spark that finally brings the Cup to Buffalo
