The announcement was made earlier today during a packed press conference at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, with Cavaliers ownership, front office staff, and former players in attendance. Wilkens, now 88, was greeted with a standing ovation as he took the podium.
“Cleveland has always had a special place in my heart,” Wilkens said. “To return to this organization and be part of its future is a true honor.”
Wilkens, who coached the Cavaliers from 1986 to 1993, led the team to some of its most memorable seasons during that era. Known for his calm demeanor and basketball IQ, Wilkens compiled a 316–258 record with the Cavs, including five playoff appearances.
His return comes at a pivotal time for the Cavaliers, who are undergoing a significant transformation with a new generation of rising stars and a revamped coaching staff. Wilkens is expected to serve as a mentor to both players and coaches, helping shape the team’s strategy and development moving forward.
Cavaliers GM Koby Altman praised the decision:
“Bringing Lenny back is about more than just basketball. It’s about culture, leadership, and legacy. He brings unmatched experience and wisdom, and we’re beyond thrilled to have him advising our team.”
The announcement has already sparked massive fanfare across Cleveland, with fans taking to social media to celebrate the return of a beloved figure.
This marks yet another chapter in the remarkable career of Wilkens — who, in addition to his time in Cleveland, also coached and played for several teams and remains the only person in NBA history to be inducted into the Hall of Fame as both a player and a coach.
