In a moment that has sent shockwaves of excitement through the AFL world, Collingwood Football Club has officially announced the return of club legend Nathan Buckley — this time as a senior coaching advisor, marking a powerful homecoming at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

The beloved former head coach and Brownlow Medallist is rejoining the Magpies in a strategic leadership capacity, nearly four years after stepping down from his head coaching role in 2021. Buckley’s return signals a bold and emotional move by the club, aimed at strengthening its football department with experience, legacy, and unwavering black-and-white pride.

“It feels like coming home,” Buckley said at this morning’s press conference. “I’ve always bled black and white. I’m here to support the next generation, help guide the culture, and bring more silverware to this club.”

A Roar at the ‘G

The announcement was made during an open training session at the MCG, where thousands of Collingwood faithful erupted into cheers upon seeing Buckley walk out onto the turf once again — this time in club apparel, alongside current head coach Craig McRae.

Chants of “Bucks is back!” filled the air as fans welcomed home one of their greatest sons.

What His Role Involves

While McRae remains at the helm of the team, Buckley’s new role as Senior Coaching & Strategy Advisor will involve mentoring assistant coaches, working with leadership groups, and providing match-day insight from the box.

The club emphasized that the role is not a replacement, but a reinforcement of the current coaching structure as Collingwood looks to sustain its dominance in the AFL after recent finals appearances.

“Nathan brings wisdom, clarity, and unmatched knowledge of this club,” McRae said. “Having him around is an incredible asset — for the players, coaches, and fans alike.”

A Collingwood Icon

Buckley is etched in Collingwood folklore — a former captain, six-time Copeland Trophy winner, and head coach from 2012–2021, leading the club to a Grand Final appearance in 2018. His influence on and off the field has long shaped the club’s identity.

His return is more than just a strategic hire — it’s a spiritual revival of sorts, tapping into the heart of what it means to be a Magpie.

AFL Community Reacts

Players and AFL figures from across the league have praised the move. Current and former Collingwood stars including Scott Pendlebury and Dane Swan took to social media to share their excitement:

“He never really left — but it’s bloody good to see him back in black and white again,” wrote Swan.
