Wannstedt, who served as the Dolphins’ head coach from 2000 to 2004, was at the helm during one of the team’s most competitive stretches in the early 2000s, leading them to back-to-back 11-win seasons and developing one of the most feared defensive units in the NFL at the time.
“We are thrilled to welcome Coach Wannstedt back to the Dolphins family,” said team president Tom Garfinkel at a press conference this morning. “His football IQ, leadership, and deep understanding of Dolphins culture will be invaluable to our current coaching staff and players.”
While he won’t be roaming the sidelines on game days, Wannstedt is expected to play a major role behind the scenes — mentoring younger coaches, assisting in defensive strategy, and contributing to overall team development as Miami continues its push toward a deep playoff run.
“Coming back to the Dolphins is like coming home,” Wannstedt said. “This organization means the world to me, and I’m honored to be part of its next chapter. There’s a lot of talent here, and I’m ready to help however I can.”
Fans have already taken to social media to celebrate the return of the legendary coach, with #WelcomeBackWannstedt trending across platforms.
The Dolphins kick off their 2025 season in just a few weeks, and with Wannstedt’s seasoned perspective added to the mix, the buzz around Miami’s postseason prospects has never been louder.
