
The announcement was made during a surprise press conference held on the court, where Karl — now 74 — was met with a standing ovation from staff, media, and long-time fans.
“Denver has always been home,” Karl said, smiling. “I’ve got so much love for this team and this city. I’m proud to return, not to relive the past, but to help shape a winning future.”
Karl coached the Nuggets from 2005 to 2013, compiling a record of 423–257 and guiding the team to nine straight playoff appearances. His 57-win season in 2012–13 remains one of the most successful in franchise history.
In his new role, Karl will work closely with head coach Michael Malone and the front office, offering strategic insight, mentoring young coaches, and assisting with player development. The team says his return is part of a broader push to integrate historical excellence with future ambition.
