The announcement was made earlier this afternoon at a packed press conference at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, where Pacers executives, former players, and fans alike gathered in excitement and disbelief.
> “This organization means a lot to me,” said Bird, 68. “I’ve been watching from the sidelines for a few years now, and I felt it was the right time to return and help shape this next chapter.”
Bird, a three-time NBA MVP as a player with the Boston Celtics and a former NBA Executive of the Year, coached the Pacers from 1997 to 2000, leading them to their first and only NBA Finals appearance in 2000. He later served in executive roles with the team, leaving a lasting legacy both on and off the court.
Pacers President Kevin Pritchard welcomed Bird back with open arms, saying, “Larry’s return is monumental. His basketball mind, leadership, and deep connection with Indiana basketball are unmatched. This is a game-changer for us.”
Bird’s new role as Senior Coaching Advisor will include working closely with current head coach Rick Carlisle, mentoring player development staff, and contributing to strategic planning during the season.
Fans erupted in applause as Bird walked onto the court earlier today to wave to the crowd. Social media has also exploded, with #LarryBird trending nationwide within minutes of the announcement.
The Pacers are hoping Bird’s return will bring a renewed energy to a team that has been on the cusp of playoff success in recent seasons. With a talented young core led by Tyrese Haliburton and Bennedict Mathurin, Bird’s presence could be the missing piece to push Indiana deep into the postseason.
This marks yet another chapter in the storied relationship between Larry Bird and the state of Indiana—a bond that only continues to grow stronger with time.
