Jackson, who famously led the Lakers to five NBA championships during his storied tenure from 1999–2004 and again from 2005–2011, will rejoin the organization to offer mentorship, strategic insight, and developmental oversight to the current coaching staff.
“Phil’s wisdom and championship pedigree are unmatched,” said Lakers General Manager Rob Pelinka in an official statement. “Bringing him back into the fold strengthens our commitment to restoring the Lakers’ championship culture.”
Crowds at the Crypto.com Arena gathered within hours of the announcement, with fans sporting vintage Jackson-era jerseys and chanting, “Zen Master Returns!” Social media lit up with tributes, excitement, and speculation on how Jackson’s influence might affect the team’s direction heading into the 2025–26 NBA season.
Though Jackson is not returning to the sidelines as head coach, his new position will reportedly allow him to work closely with head coach Darvin Ham, offering strategic input and mentoring players both on and off the court.
“I’m honored to return to the Lakers family,” Jackson shared in a brief media appearance. “This organization has always held a special place in my heart. I look forward to helping guide this next generation of Lakers toward greatness.”
This marks the first time Jackson has held an active basketball operations role since serving as president of the New York Knicks from 2014 to 2017.
The Lakers, currently rebuilding around rising star Bronny James, veteran Anthony Davis, and former MVP LeBron James, see Jackson’s return as a timely morale and culture boost.
