BREAKING NEWS: Ex-Alaska Air Pilot Who Tried to Cut Engines Midflight Sentenced to Time Served, Avoids Prison due to…..

former Alaska Airlines pilot who attempted to cut the engines of a plane midflight in 2022 has been sentenced to time served, avoiding a prison term.

Joseph Emerson, 62, was a captain on an Alaska Airlines flight from Everett, Washington to San Francisco on October 22, 2022. About 15 minutes after takeoff, Emerson, who was not scheduled to be on the flight, entered the cockpit and attempted to cut both engines with a fire extinguisher. The plane’s first officer and another pilot on board were able to subdue Emerson and prevent a catastrophic failure.

Emerson was arrested and charged with one count of attempted destruction of an aircraft. He had been on leave from Alaska Airlines at the time of the incident and was reportedly experiencing depression.

On Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Robert Lasnik sentenced Emerson to time served, which amounts to about eight months. Emerson had been held in custody since his arrest and had been cooperating with authorities.

Prosecutors had requested a sentence of 10 to 18 months in prison, citing the seriousness of the offense and the potential for harm to the 83 passengers and crew on board. However, Judge Lasnik took into account Emerson’s cooperation and his mental health issues.

“While Mr. Emerson’s actions were reckless and put the lives of everyone on that plane at risk, I also take into account that he has been cooperative and has been taking steps to address his mental health issues,” Judge Lasnik said.

Emerson’s defense team had argued that their client was not a threat to public safety and that he had been experiencing a mental health crisis at the time of the incident.

The incident led to a comprehensive review of Alaska Airlines’ safety procedures and protocols for ensuring the security of its flights. The airline has since implemented additional measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Emerson’s actions on the flight were widely condemned by aviation experts and authorities, who emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety and security of passengers and crew.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigated the incident and issued a report highlighting the need for airlines to have robust procedures in place for addressing potential security threats.

The incident was a sobering reminder of the potential risks and vulnerabilities associated with air travel, and the importance of ensuring that pilots and airline staff are equipped to respond to emergency situations.
