BREAKING NEWS: Devastating Fire Burns Down Spartanburg Hospital Due to Electrical Malfunction
Spartanburg, SC – May 2, 2025
A massive fire broke out early Friday morning at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, engulfing the facility in flames and reducing much of the structure to rubble. The blaze, which officials say was caused by an electrical malfunction in the hospital’s basement utility room, began around 2:15 a.m. and quickly spread through multiple floors.
Emergency services responded within minutes, but the intensity of the fire and heavy smoke hampered rescue and containment efforts. Firefighters from Spartanburg, Greer, and surrounding counties worked for over six hours to control the inferno. By the time it was fully extinguished shortly before 9:00 a.m., most of the hospital’s west and central wings had been destroyed.
Hospital staff acted swiftly to evacuate patients. According to a preliminary statement from hospital administrator Dr. Linda Chen, over 200 patients were safely relocated to nearby facilities, including Pelham Medical Center and Prisma Health Greenville Memorial. Tragically, three fatalities have been confirmed — two patients in intensive care and one hospital employee — with several more injured, including firefighters suffering from smoke inhalation and heat exhaustion.
“This is a heartbreaking day for our community,” said Spartanburg Mayor Jerome Sanders during a press conference. “Spartanburg Regional has served as a cornerstone of our healthcare system for generations. We will do everything in our power to support recovery efforts.”
Officials from the South Carolina State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) are jointly investigating the cause. While early reports suggest the fire was accidental, authorities have not ruled out negligence or structural failings.
Governor Henry McMaster has declared a state of emergency in Spartanburg County and pledged state resources to assist in patient relocation, emergency care, and reconstruction efforts.
Family members searching for loved ones who were at the hospital are urged to call the emergency hotline set up at (864) 555-2025 or visit the patient reunification center established at Spartanburg High School.
