In a monumental development for Dallas Mavericks fans and the NBA at large, team owner Mark Cuban and his family have officially announced that Dirk Nowitzki, the legendary power forward and long-time face of the franchise, will return to the organization — this time in the boardroom — as a Co-Owner.
The announcement was made early Monday morning in a joint press release from the Mavericks’ front office, calling Nowitzki’s return a “full-circle moment” for both the franchise and the city of Dallas.
“Dirk has always been more than just a player — he’s the heart and soul of this franchise,” said Mark Cuban. “Bringing him in as a co-owner is not only a tribute to his legacy, but a strategic step forward as we continue building the future of Mavericks basketball.”
Nowitzki, who spent his entire 21-season NBA career with the Mavericks, led the team to its first and only NBA Championship in 2011 and retired in 2019 as the sixth all-time leading scorer in league history. His jersey, No. 41, was retired in 2022, and a statue honoring him was unveiled outside the American Airlines Center the same year.
In a brief statement, Nowitzki expressed his excitement about the new role:
“Dallas has always been home. I’m honored to take this next step with the Mavericks and contribute to the team in a new way. I look forward to helping shape the next generation of champions.”
The move is already sending shockwaves throughout the basketball world, with fans and analysts alike praising the decision as both symbolic and strategic. It is still unclear how involved Nowitzki will be in basketball operations, but sources close to the organization say he will have “a significant voice” in long-term decisions.
More details are expected in a press conference later this week.
