In a move that has stunned the sports world and warmed the hearts of many across New England, former Boston Bruins captain and beloved NHL superstar Patrice Bergeron has donated his entire $12.9 million post-retirement bonus and sponsorship earnings to a new initiative aimed at tackling homelessness in the greater Boston area.

The donation will fully fund the construction of 150 transitional housing units and 300 emergency shelter beds, providing critical relief to hundreds of individuals and families currently living on the streets or in precarious conditions.

“I’ve seen the effects of homelessness firsthand growing up,” Bergeron said during a press conference held this morning in Dorchester, where the first shelter site will break ground next month. “I knew if I ever had the chance to do something big, I wouldn’t hesitate. No one should have to sleep on the street in a city as strong and compassionate as Boston.”

Bergeron, 40, who retired from the NHL in 2023 after an illustrious 19-season career — all with the Bruins — has long been known for his leadership on and off the ice. This recent act of generosity may be his most impactful play yet.

The initiative, titled “Hope on Ice,” is being carried out in partnership with the City of Boston and several nonprofit organizations. In addition to shelter beds and housing, the facilities will offer job training, mental health counseling, addiction support, and family reunification services.

Mayor Michelle Wu praised Bergeron’s donation as “a transformative gift” that demonstrates the potential for public figures to catalyze real, lasting change.

“Patrice has always represented the best of Boston,” Mayor Wu said. “His leadership didn’t end when he left the rink. This gift will change lives — and generations.”

Longtime teammate and friend Brad Marchand added in a social media post, “This is why we all looked up to Bergy — heart of a lion, soul of a saint. Absolute legend.”

Construction on the first housing facility is expected to begin in November, with doors opening by the summer of 2026. Bergeron has committed to staying involved with the project long-term, hinting he may even serve on the board of directors of the new foundation.

“This isn’t a one-time thing,” Bergeron said. “This is just the beginning.”
