In a monumental announcement that has electrified the hockey world, Buffalo Sabres owner Terry Pegula and his family have officially declared that Gilbert Perreault, the legendary captain, Hall of Famer, and long-time face of the franchise, will return to the organization in 2026 as a co-owner.
The stunning news was confirmed early Monday morning during a press conference at KeyBank Center, where Pegula described Perreault’s return as “a full-circle moment for the franchise and the city of Buffalo.”
“Gilbert represents everything the Sabres stand for — passion, loyalty, and excellence,” Pegula stated. “Having him return to help lead this organization into the future is a dream for every fan who’s ever cheered for the Blue and Gold.”
Perreault, who spent his entire 17-season NHL career with the Sabres from 1970 to 1986, remains the team’s all-time leader in points (1,326) and was the centerpiece of the legendary “French Connection” line alongside Rick Martin and René Robert. His No. 11 jersey was retired by the Sabres in 1990, and he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1990 as well.
Speaking to reporters, the 74-year-old icon expressed deep emotion about his new role:
“Buffalo has always been home to me. The fans, the city — they made me who I am. To come back not as a player, but as a partner in building the next generation of Sabres hockey, is truly special.”
While details of the ownership structure have not yet been disclosed, insiders suggest Perreault will have a significant advisory role in hockey operations, community engagement, and player development — helping bridge the franchise’s storied past with its bright future.
Fans across Western New York erupted with excitement as news broke, flooding social media with tributes and celebration posts. Many see Perreault’s return as a symbolic turning point for the Sabres, who have been working to rebuild into a playoff contender.
As the 2026 season approaches, one thing is certain: the spirit of the French Connection is once again alive and well in Buffalo.
This is a developing story. More details will follow as the Sabres organization releases official statements.
