In an unprecedented display of generosity and compassion, Arizona Cardinals cornerback Will Johnson has stunned the National Football League — and the world — by donating his entire $98 million signing bonus to a cause that hits close to home.
Moments after signing a record-breaking five-year contract extension with the Cardinals, Johnson, 27, announced that 100% of his signing bonus would go directly to founding the “Beyond the Game Foundation” — a nonprofit aimed at providing housing, education, and mental health services for underprivileged youth and struggling former NFL players.
“Football gave me everything I have,” Johnson said at a press conference Thursday morning. “But I’ve seen what happens when the lights go out — for kids in communities like the one I grew up in, and for players when the game is over. This is bigger than football. This is about legacy.”
A Bold Move With Deep Roots
Johnson, a rising star and former first-round pick out of LSU, grew up in South Baton Rouge, an area long plagued by poverty, systemic inequality, and under-resourced schools. Throughout his college and professional career, he has quietly supported youth mentorship programs, built community centers, and even paid college tuition for five local students — all without media fanfare.
But today’s move is different.
“When he told us what he was planning, we were speechless,” said Cardinals GM Steve Keim. “You sign a $200 million contract and immediately give half of it away? That’s not just rare — that’s unheard of. Will Johnson is one of one.”
The “Beyond the Game” Mission
According to Johnson, the Beyond the Game Foundation will launch initiatives in Phoenix, Baton Rouge, and East Cleveland (his mother’s hometown), with three main goals:
- Youth Empowerment: Building after-school programs, athletic training, and scholarship pipelines for low-income students.
- Mental Health Access: Creating confidential, stigma-free therapy resources for young athletes and retired NFL players.
- Transitional Housing: Offering safe, short-term housing for those transitioning out of foster care or the NFL.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell issued a statement just hours after the announcement:
“What Will Johnson has done is truly extraordinary. This is the kind of leadership our league — and our country — needs. He’s not just playing the game. He’s changing it.”
Teammates React
Fellow Cardinals players expressed pride and amazement at Johnson’s announcement.
“That’s our guy,” said Pro Bowl safety Budda Baker. “Most people dream of getting money like that. Will’s dreaming about how to give it away. That tells you everything you need to know.”
Not About Headlines
When asked whether he was worried about the financial sacrifice, Johnson laughed.
“You can’t take it with you. But you can leave something behind that lasts longer than touchdowns or trophies.”
