The Akaroa water sports community is facing significant changes as plans for the 2025 season are being relocated following the discovery of structural damage at the iconic Akaroa Wharf. The Christchurch City Council has announced that the wharf requires a comprehensive rebuild, prompting immediate action to ensure the safety and continuity of water-based activities in the area.
Structural Concerns at Akaroa Wharf
Recent assessments have revealed extensive damage to the hardwood timbers of Akaroa Wharf, particularly the underwater piles. This deterioration has raised safety concerns, necessitating a full reconstruction to maintain the integrity of the structure.
Interim Solutions: Upgrades to Alternative Jetties
In response to the impending closure of Akaroa Wharf, the Christchurch City Council has initiated upgrades to alternative facilities to accommodate water sports and commercial operations:
-
Drummonds Jetty: A complete rebuild is planned, extending the structure to 108 meters into Akaroa Harbour. This extension ensures adequate depth for both recreational and commercial vessels during low tide. The project includes the addition of floating pontoons to enhance capacity during the Akaroa Wharf reconstruction.
-
Daly’s Wharf: Strengthening work and partial decking replacement are scheduled. Temporary installations, such as a crane and diesel bowser, will support ongoing maritime activities. The shelter at the end of Daly’s Wharf will be relocated to a nearby park during construction and reinstated upon completion.
Timeline and Community Engagement
The reconstruction of Akaroa Wharf is slated to commence in early 2026, following the approval of resource consents and the appointment of contractors. The project is expected to conclude in 2027. A public hearing regarding the resource consent is anticipated in late 2025. To keep residents informed, a community information session will be held in early 2025, detailing design plans, timelines, and potential impacts of the rebuild.
Impact on Akaroa Water Sports 2025 Season
With the closure of Akaroa Wharf, water sports activities for the 2025 season will be relocated to the upgraded Drummonds Jetty and Daly’s Wharf. These enhancements aim to provide safe and functional spaces for both recreational and commercial users during the transition period.
The Christchurch City Council acknowledges the community’s patience and support as these essential infrastructure improvements are undertaken to ensure the long-term viability of Akaroa’s maritime facilities.
