Excitement and nostalgia swept through the Colonial Life Arena today as former South Carolina Gamecocks Women’s Basketball legend A’ja Wilson made a triumphant return to her alma mater — this time, not as a player, but as a Senior Coaching Advisor for the Gamecocks.
Fans erupted into cheers as the official announcement was made during a special event held at the arena, with students, alumni, and media packing the stands to witness the emotional homecoming of one of the most iconic figures in South Carolina basketball history.
Wilson, who led the Gamecocks to their first NCAA National Championship in 2017 and earned multiple national player of the year awards, returns to the program after a dominant WNBA career with the Las Vegas Aces, where she became a multiple-time MVP and champion.
> “This is home,” Wilson said during the press conference. “South Carolina made me who I am, and I’m honored to be back — not just to give back, but to build the next generation of champions.”
Her role as Senior Coaching Advisor will focus on player development, mentorship, and recruiting support alongside legendary head coach Dawn Staley, who called the reunion a “full-circle moment for the program.”
> “A’ja has always been a leader — on and off the court,” Staley said. “Having her voice, her experience, and her passion back in the building is game-changing for us.”
Social media lit up with tributes, videos, and emotional reactions from former teammates and current players, many of whom grew up idolizing Wilson’s game and leadership.
More details about her official coaching duties and schedule will be released in the coming weeks, but one thing is certain — the return of A’ja Wilson has reignited energy around the Gamecocks program as they prepare for another championship push.
