In an emotional moment that stunned fans around the world, coach Ivan Cleary of the Penrith Panthers became tearful today following what he described as a “deeply personal and life-altering DNA revelation.”
Speaking at a press event held at Panthers HQ in Western Sydney, Cleary shared that recent participation in a genetic ancestry program led him to uncover unexpected connections to his family’s heritage.
“I always thought I knew where I came from,” Cleary said, voice breaking, “but finding out that my ancestors came from places I had never even heard of — it’s changed how I see my identity. It’s reminded me that family, history, and self-understanding matter.”
