After suffering a crushing loss at the Transylvania Open, Simona Halep, the former world No. 1 and two-time Grand Slam champion, unexpectedly announced her retirement from professional tennis. In the round of 32, Halep faced Lucia Bronzetti of Italy, who she lost to 6-1, 6-1. Halep returned to competitive play with this match following a nine-month suspension for doping. Highlights of Halep’s remarkable career include wins at Wimbledon in 2019 and the French Open in 2018. But there have been a lot of difficulties in recent years.
