In a heartbreaking development shaking the sports world, CNN has reported that the Calgary Flames hockey team was involved in a deadly plane crash while en route to an international tournament scheduled to begin this weekend in Minnesota.

The aircraft, a chartered Boeing 737 carrying players, coaches, and team personnel, reportedly disappeared from radar shortly after departing Calgary International Airport early Friday morning. Authorities later confirmed the aircraft crashed near a remote area just outside Riding Mountain National Park in Manitoba.

Rescue teams responding to emergency locator signals discovered wreckage spread across a wooded area. As of this writing, 26 passengers are confirmed dead, including multiple starting players, while 8 survivors—most with critical injuries—have been airlifted to hospitals in Winnipeg and Brandon.

The Flames were on their way to take part in the Heritage Ice Cup, a high-profile international pre-playoff showcase. The tournament has since been suspended indefinitely.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman released an emotional statement:

“This is one of the darkest days in NHL history. We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of life, and we stand in unwavering support of the Flames organization, their families, and the entire Calgary community.”

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also addressed the nation, calling it a “national tragedy,” and offering federal assistance for the families affected and the ongoing investigation.

Emergency responders say recovery efforts are still underway and the full list of passengers will be made public once all next of kin have been notified. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) has launched an immediate investigation into the crash’s cause.

Fans have gathered outside the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, laying flowers, jerseys, and heartfelt notes as a spontaneous memorial has taken shape. The team has asked for privacy as they process this devastating loss.
