For Ivan Cleary, the respected head coach of the Penrith Panthers, football has always been at the center of his world. Known for his calm leadership and sharp tactical mind, Cleary has spent decades building one of the most successful teams in the National Rugby League. In a heartfelt reflection, Cleary shared a rare glimpse into his personal journey and how his partner Rebecca became one of the most important influences in his life.
“When I first met Rebecca, I’ll admit she wasn’t what I expected,” Cleary revealed with a smile. “My mind was fully on footy and I wasn’t looking for anything else. Coaching and the game were taking up almost every part of my life.”
At the time, Cleary was deeply immersed in the demanding world of professional rugby league. Long hours at training, match preparation, and the constant pressure to deliver results meant there was little room for anything beyond football. Relationships were not something he had planned for.
But Rebecca quickly changed that.
“She was different,” Cleary explained. “She had this spark about her. She was confident, full of energy, and wasn’t afraid to speak her mind.”
What initially started as casual conversations soon developed into something far more meaningful. Cleary admitted that Rebecca’s personality stood out immediately. She brought a sense of balance and warmth into a life that had been largely structured around competition and performance.
“At the time, I wasn’t sure how things would go,” he said. “But the more I got to know her, the more I realized how special she is.”
Rebecca’s presence gradually became a source of strength for the Panthers coach. In a sport where results can swing emotions from extreme highs to crushing lows, having someone grounded and supportive at home proved invaluable.
Over time, Cleary says he came to appreciate how much Rebecca helped shape his perspective on life beyond the game.
“Football will always be a big part of who I am,” he admitted. “But Rebecca reminded me that there’s more to life than just the next match or the next season.”
Today, Cleary openly credits Rebecca for helping him maintain balance through the intense pressures of elite coaching. While fans often see the composed figure on the sidelines guiding the Panthers, few realize the role Rebecca has played behind the scenes.
Now, Cleary says she is not just his partner, but his biggest supporter and the person who keeps him grounded.
“She’s someone who challenges me, supports me, and reminds me what really matters,” he said. “I’m incredibly lucky to have her.”
