In an inspiring act of generosity, Wisconsin Badgers women’s volleyball standout Mimi Colyer has announced a $7.5 million investment to convert a private residence into a fully equipped shelter for homeless youth. The initiative aims to provide not only safe housing but also educational support, mental health resources, and skill-building programs for young people facing housing insecurity.
Colyer, who has earned widespread acclaim for her athletic prowess on the court, emphasized the importance of giving back to the community off the court. “Volleyball has given me so much, and now I want to use my platform to make a real difference for kids who need a safe place to grow and thrive,” Colyer stated in a press release.
The project, set to break ground later this year, will feature dormitory-style accommodations, study areas, counseling centers, and recreational spaces. Local community leaders have praised the move, calling it a โgame-changerโ for vulnerable youth in the region.
Officials have confirmed that the shelter will collaborate with existing social services and nonprofit organizations to ensure comprehensive care for residents. Plans are also underway to host mentorship programs, connecting youth with Colyer and other athletes who can provide guidance and support.
Colyerโs investment highlights a growing trend among professional and collegiate athletes using their resources to create meaningful social impact. As construction begins, the community is already rallying behind the initiative, hopeful for the positive change it promises to bring.
