In a remarkable act of generosity that has taken the rugby league world by surprise, Newcastle Knights superstar fullback Kalyn Ponga has reportedly invested $5.6 million to convert one of his residential properties into a dedicated shelter for homeless youth in the Hunter region.
According to early reports, Ponga purchased the property earlier this year but has now decided to repurpose it entirely as a long-term community support facility. Construction and refurbishment plans have already begun, with the space expected to include emergency beds, counselling rooms, recreational areas, and an education support center aimed at helping vulnerable young people get back on their feet.
Sources close to Ponga say the fullback has been deeply moved by the rising number of displaced youth in the region and wanted to take meaningful action. While he has previously been involved in charitable programs, this marks his largest personal investment into community welfare to date.
Local leaders and social workers have praised the initiative, describing it as โlife-changingโ for young people experiencing homelessness.
The Newcastle Knights have also voiced their full support, acknowledging Pongaโs leadership off the field and his commitment to giving back to the community that has rallied behind him throughout his career.
More details are expected to emerge as the project progresses, with an official announcement from Ponga anticipated later this week.
