In a powerful gesture of compassion and community commitment, Brisbane Broncos fullback Reece Walsh has announced a $5.6 million personal investment to convert one of his residential properties into a long-term shelter for homeless and at-risk youth.
The property will be redesigned into a spacious community refuge featuring round-the-clock support staff, emergency beds, longer-term accommodation spaces, mental-health and rehabilitation services, classrooms for tutoring and career training, as well as recreational and fitness facilities inspired by Broncos conditioning programs.
Speaking earlier today, Walsh said the inspiration came from witnessing the growing crisis of youth homelessness in Queensland.
“I’ve been lucky to have people guide me through tough moments in my life. Not everyone gets that. If this home can give young people safety, support, and a chance to rebuild, then it’s worth every cent,” Walsh said.
Youth advocacy groups across the state have welcomed the announcement, describing it as a major boost at a time when housing demand far exceeds available resources. They also praised Walsh for taking a hands-on approach, with plans to participate in mentoring sessions and community outreach programs connected to the shelter.
Broncos CEO Dave Donaghy called the initiative “an extraordinary act of heart,” noting that Walsh’s commitment sets a new benchmark for player-led community involvement.
Renovation work is expected to begin within weeks, with the shelter projected to open its doors in early 2026.
