In a stunning announcement that has set Badger Nation ablaze, former Wisconsin head coach and hometown legend Paul Chryst is officially returning to the program — this time taking on the role of Senior Coaching Advisor with the Wisconsin Badgers football team.
Athletic Director Chris McIntosh confirmed the news Saturday morning, describing the move as a “homecoming for one of Wisconsin’s greatest football minds.” Chryst’s return marks yet another powerful reconnection to the program’s roots, following Barry Alvarez’s recent appointment as Chief Football Officer.
“Paul knows what Wisconsin football stands for,” McIntosh said in a press release. “His leadership, experience, and deep connection to this program will continue to elevate us in every way.”
Chryst, who previously served as Wisconsin’s head coach from 2015 to 2022, compiled a record of 67–26, leading the Badgers to three Big Ten West titles and multiple New Year’s Six bowl appearances. Known for his calm demeanor, disciplined coaching style, and dedication to player development, Chryst remains one of the most respected figures in college football.
In his new senior coaching role, Chryst will mentor the current staff, assist in offensive development, and play a key part in long-term strategic planning alongside head coach Luke Fickell.
“Coming back home means everything,” Chryst said in a statement. “I love this program, this state, and everything the Wisconsin ‘W’ stands for. This time, my goal is to help take the team to the next level — not just winning games, but building a foundation that lasts for generations.”
Chryst’s return further solidifies Wisconsin’s push to blend tradition with modern innovation under Fickell’s leadership. With Alvarez and Chryst both involved, the Badgers are uniting decades of football wisdom and championship experience at a pivotal time for the program.
Fans across Madison and beyond have already taken to social media, celebrating what many are calling a “reunion of legends.” As the Badgers prepare for the 2025 season, optimism around Camp Randall Stadium hasn’t been this high in years.
Further details regarding Chryst’s specific responsibilities and start date are expected to be announced in the coming days.
