In a move no one saw coming, Canberra Raiders legend and forward powerhouse Josh Papali’i has reportedly turned down a mind-blowing $340 million multi-code deal from AFL giants Collingwood, stunning fans across both the NRL and AFL.
Papali’i, known for his loyalty, grit, and unmatched impact on the field, was approached by Collingwood executives in what insiders have called “the most aggressive cross-code recruitment attempt in Australian sports history.” The club allegedly offered Papali’i a ten-year ambassadorial player-coach deal, massive commercial bonuses, and ownership stakes in future AFL expansion projects.
But Papali’i had other ideas.
“You can’t put a price on heart,” he said in a surprise press conference outside GIO Stadium. “I bleed green. My legacy is here in Canberra. This city, this club — they made me who I am. No amount of money can buy that.”
The 33-year-old prop has instead re-signed with the Raiders on a lifetime deal, one which will reportedly see him transition into a leadership and development role post-retirement, with heavy involvement in Pasifika community outreach programs and junior pathways development.
The NRL Reacts
NRL CEO Andrew Abdo praised the decision, calling it “a win for rugby league’s soul.”
“Josh represents everything great about our game — loyalty, community, and passion. His decision sends a powerful message to the next generation of players.”
Raiders fans are euphoric.
Social media erupted with green love:
What’s Next?
While Collingwood has yet to comment, sources inside the AFL say this rejection has “rocked” their long-term cross-code strategies.
Meanwhile, Papali’i is preparing for another run with the Raiders, eyeing not just a premiership — but a dynasty.
“I’m not chasing paychecks. I’m chasing glory. And glory wears green.”
