Netflix has officially dropped “The Underdog,” a powerful new documentary chronicling the inspiring life and career of Mark Jackson, the beloved New York Knicks legend and former NBA point guard. Slated for release on October 10, 2025, the film is already generating major buzz across the sports and entertainment world.
Directed by award-winning filmmaker Ava DuVernay, The Underdog takes viewers deep into the journey of a Brooklyn native who defied the odds to become one of the NBA’s most respected floor generals. From his early days growing up in the tough streets of New York, to leading the Knicks with heart and grit in the late ’80s and early ’90s, and eventually transitioning into a prominent coaching and broadcasting career, the documentary paints an intimate portrait of Jackson’s highs, lows, and lasting impact on the game.
The film features never-before-seen footage, interviews with basketball icons like Patrick Ewing, Reggie Miller, Stephen Curry, and Jeff Van Gundy, along with candid conversations with Jackson’s family and former teammates.
Netflix describes the project as “a story of faith, perseverance, and the unshakable belief in one’s purpose.”
“Mark Jackson was never the flashiest guy on the court, but his leadership, toughness, and basketball IQ made him a cornerstone of every team he was on,” said DuVernay in a statement. “This film is about more than basketball — it’s about the power of staying true to yourself, even when the world underestimates you.”
Fans and critics are already praising The Underdog as a must-watch for sports lovers and anyone drawn to stories of resilience.
“The Underdog” premieres globally on Netflix October 10.
