In a monumental and emotional return that is already sending shockwaves through the hockey world, Mark Messier, the legendary New York Rangers captain and Hall of Famer, is officially coming back to where it all began.
The James Dolan family, owners of the New York Rangers and Madison Square Garden, announced today that Messier will rejoin the organization in 2025 as the franchise’s first-ever Chief Hockey Officer (CHO) — a newly created executive position aimed at shaping the team’s long-term vision and hockey operations strategy.
“This is a homecoming that Ranger fans have dreamed of for years,” said MSG Sports Chairman James Dolan in a press statement. “Mark’s leadership, legacy, and unmatched understanding of what it means to be a Ranger make him the perfect person to guide this franchise into a new era.”
Messier, affectionately known as “The Captain,” led the Rangers to their historic 1994 Stanley Cup victory, ending a 54-year championship drought. His return is not just symbolic — he is expected to take an active role in player development, team culture, and hockey operations, working closely with the front office and coaching staff.
“I’m honored and thrilled to come back to the Rangers in a role that allows me to shape the future of this team,” Messier said. “This organization and its fans mean the world to me. It’s time to bring the Cup back to New York.”
Sources close to the organization say Messier will begin his duties immediately following the 2024–2025 NHL season.
The reaction from Rangers fans and the broader NHL community has been overwhelming, with social media ablaze and former teammates, current players, and hockey personalities celebrating the move.
