In a stunning move that has electrified the basketball world, Los Angeles Lakers legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, often referred to simply as “The Great One,” has officially rejoined the franchise—not as a player, but as a Senior Coaching Advisor.
The announcement was made early Friday morning by Lakers team president Jeanie Buss and head coach Darvin Ham, who praised the decision as a “historic moment that bridges the championship legacy of the past with the championship ambitions of our future.”
“Kareem isn’t just a Lakers legend—he’s a global icon,” Buss said during the press conference at Crypto.com Arena. “His knowledge, experience, and presence will be invaluable to our players, both on and off the court.”
Abdul-Jabbar, 78, remains the NBA’s all-time leading scorer until LeBron James recently surpassed him in career points. Still, many basketball purists and historians regard Kareem’s dominance, leadership, and influence on and off the court as second to none.
In his new role, Abdul-Jabbar will work closely with the coaching staff and mentor younger players, especially rising star center Jaylen Crosswell, who has frequently cited Kareem as his biggest inspiration.
“To have the man who literally invented the skyhook in your locker room? That’s surreal,” Crosswell told reporters. “It’s like having Einstein teach you math.”
This marks Kareem’s first formal return to the Lakers in an official capacity since his retirement in 1989. Although he has maintained a visible presence through activism, writing, and occasional commentary, this new role puts him back in the heart of basketball operations.
Kareem himself was reflective yet enthusiastic:
“Basketball has given me everything,” he said. “This team, this city—they shaped my life. I’m honored to give back and help build something great again.”
The Lakers, currently in a rebuilding phase after a disappointing 2024-25 season, hope Kareem’s return will be the spark needed to return to championship form.
Fans and analysts alike are already calling this move “one of the most iconic reunions in sports history.”
