Netflix has just dropped the trailer for its newest original sports documentary, The UnderDog, chronicling the extraordinary life and career of Los Angeles Dodgers legend Orel Hershiser. The film is slated for global release on October 18, 2025, just ahead of the MLB World Series.
The documentary dives deep into Hershiser’s unlikely rise from a lightly recruited college pitcher to one of the most dominant forces in baseball history. Best known for his historic 1988 season — where he set the MLB record for consecutive scoreless innings pitched (59) and led the Dodgers to a World Series championship — Hershiser’s story is one of grit, perseverance, and defying the odds.
“Orel Hershiser is the embodiment of resilience,” said executive producer Alex Gibney. “This film isn’t just about baseball. It’s about belief, faith, failure, and the fight to rise again.”
The UnderDog features never-before-seen archival footage, intimate interviews with Hershiser, former teammates like Kirk Gibson and Fernando Valenzuela, as well as commentary from baseball legends, sports journalists, and family members.
The title “The UnderDog” nods to Hershiser’s under-the-radar beginnings, his quiet demeanor, and his unrelenting drive that silenced doubters time and again.
Fans and critics are already buzzing, with early reviews from pre-screenings calling it “emotionally powerful” and “a must-watch not just for baseball fans, but for anyone who loves a great comeback story.”
Mark your calendars: “The UnderDog” premieres exclusively on Netflix October 18.
