In a stunning and deeply heartfelt move, former NHL superstar and Florida Panthers legend Roberto Luongo has announced he is donating 100% of his $100 million in accumulated bonus and sponsorship earnings to launch a groundbreaking homeless shelter and transitional housing initiative across South Florida.
The initiative, known as “Luongo Homes First Project,” aims to fund the construction of 150 housing units and provide 300 shelter beds across three counties. The first facility is set to break ground in early 2026 in Broward County.
“I’ve seen the effects of homelessness firsthand growing up,” Luongo said at a press conference this morning. “Whether it was friends of mine couch-surfing, or families living in cars, it’s always stayed with me. I knew if I ever had the means, I wanted to do more than just write a check — I wanted to build something real.”
A Legacy Beyond the Ice
Luongo, who retired in 2019 and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2022, has long been known for his philanthropic efforts. But this donation — totaling an estimated $100 million — is by far the most substantial charitable contribution ever made by a former NHL player.
The funds will be used not only to build housing and emergency shelter beds, but also to provide on-site mental health support, addiction recovery programs, and job readiness training — a holistic approach to tackling homelessness that advocates have praised.
Public, Private, and Personal
The Luongo Homes First Project is a public-private partnership, but the entire seed funding is privately provided by Luongo. According to insiders, Luongo has opted to live a more minimalist lifestyle in retirement, focusing on family, coaching youth hockey, and quietly planning this initiative over the past three years.
“This isn’t a one-time photo op for Roberto,” said Angela Mendoza, Director of South Florida Housing Advocates. “He’s been in every planning meeting, asking the right questions, and making sure this program actually works.”
Widespread Reaction
Reactions across the hockey world and beyond have been swift and emotional.
- Gary Bettman, NHL Commissioner: “Roberto’s generosity is unprecedented. He’s setting a new gold standard for what athletes can do post-career.”
- Aleksander Barkov, current Panthers captain: “I always looked up to him on the ice. Now, I admire him even more off it.”
- Governor Javier Ortega of Florida also released a statement: “Roberto Luongo has shown us what true leadership and compassion look like. Florida is grateful.”
What’s Next?
The first complex, slated for Fort Lauderdale, will feature 50 transitional housing units, 100 shelter beds, a community kitchen, and a 24/7 mental health crisis response center. Two more facilities are in development in Miami-Dade and Palm Beach Counties.
Luongo hinted that this is “just the beginning.”
“Hockey gave me everything. Now it’s time to give it back — not just to fans, but to the people in the shadows.”
