In a move that has stunned not only the NHL but also the wider basketball world (yes, really), Boston Bruins right wing David Pastrňák has made headlines today for something that transcends the game of hockey—or any game, for that matter.
Upon signing his latest $58 million contract extension, Pastrňák made a quiet but groundbreaking decision: he has donated his entire signing bonus — all $58 million of it — to build multi-sport youth centers across North America, including cities without NHL teams.
“It’s never just been about hockey,” said Pastrňák in an emotional press conference. “Growing up, I didn’t always have access to a rink. Some kids don’t even have access to a ball. I want to change that.”
And change it he will.
Pastrňák’s donation will fund the creation of the Pasta Play Centers — state-of-the-art community facilities equipped with ice rinks, basketball courts, study lounges, and mental health resources. The centers will be free to access for underprivileged youth and families in more than 30 cities, including Detroit, Atlanta, and even parts of Canada where organized youth sports have long been underfunded.
This sudden foray into the basketball world may seem odd to some, but insiders say it’s not surprising.
“He’s always been shooting hoops during practice warm-ups,” said Bruins teammate Brad Marchand. “He drains threes like it’s nothing. We used to joke he signed with the wrong league.”
While Pastrňák has no plans to switch sports, he hopes the gesture will unite athletes across all leagues in building something bigger than themselves.
Reactions have been pouring in:
- LeBron James tweeted: “Much respect to @pastrnak96. That’s how you lead off the court.”
- Connor McDavid posted: “Legendary move. We need more of this in our game.”
- Even Shaquille O’Neal weighed in, joking on TNT: “Pastrňák? That boy can play for the Celtics if he wants.”
Fans are calling it the most selfless act in recent sports memory.
One young fan in Dorchester summed it up best:
“He didn’t just sign a contract. He signed a future for kids like me.”
