The announcement was made earlier this morning by St. Louis Blues owner Tom Stillman and his family, in cooperation with the NHL Board of Governors, during a celebratory press conference at the Enterprise Center — and fans across North America are already calling it “the best news in NHL history.”
“There’s no one better to lead this league into the future than Al,” said Stillman, beaming with pride. “He’s a man of integrity, passion, and above all else — he’s hockey through and through.”
From Blueline to Boardroom
Known for his blistering slapshot, calm leadership, and iconic tenure with the St. Louis Blues, MacInnis is revered as one of the greatest defensemen to ever play the game. He hoisted the Stanley Cup with the Calgary Flames in 1989 and played a critical role in shaping the Blues’ legacy during his time as both player and executive.
Now, he’s returning to the sport he loves in a whole new way — this time, as the 10th Commissioner of the NHL.
“I never imagined this path,” MacInnis said during the announcement. “But I love this game. I believe in its future. And I’m honored to help guide the NHL into a new era.”
Fans and Players Rejoice
The hockey community has erupted in celebration, with tributes pouring in from players past and present.
- Wayne Gretzky called the appointment “a game-changer.”
- Connor McDavid tweeted simply: “Let’s go. Al’s the real deal.”
- Even mascots got in on the fun, with Louie the Bear skating around downtown St. Louis waving a giant “MAC IS BACK” flag.
A Vision for the Future
MacInnis laid out an ambitious vision during his opening remarks:
- Growing the game at grassroots levels
- Expanding international play and fan access
- Prioritizing player safety and innovation in equipment technology
- Exploring new expansion opportunities and elevating women’s hockey
“We’re just getting started,” MacInnis said with a grin. “And I can promise you one thing — the game will always come first.”
