The Indiana Pacers have been dealt an unexpected shake-up as head coach Rick Carlisle has temporarily stepped away from his coaching duties after testing positive for COVID-19. The news broke just minutes ago, with the team confirming that Carlisle will enter the NBA’s health and safety protocols effective immediately.

According to sources within the organization, Carlisle’s positive test came during the Pacers’ standard pre-game health screenings earlier today. While initial reports indicate that the 64-year-old coach is experiencing only mild symptoms, medical staff have advised full rest and isolation until he is cleared to return.
In his absence, Associate Head Coach Lloyd Pierce will take over as acting head coach. Pierce, a seasoned NBA figure who previously led the Atlanta Hawks from 2018 to 2021, has been a key part of the Pacers’ coaching staff since joining in 2021. His familiarity with the team’s system and rapport with players is expected to provide a steady hand during Carlisle’s absence.
“Coach Carlisle’s health and recovery are our absolute priority,” the Pacers said in an official statement. “We have full trust in Lloyd Pierce’s ability to lead the team during this time, and we look forward to Rick’s safe return.”
Players quickly voiced their support for Carlisle, with Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton writing on social media: “We’ll hold it down until you’re back, Coach. Get well soon!”
The Pacers are currently in the midst of a pivotal stretch in their season, with a packed schedule over the next two weeks. Pierce’s leadership will be tested immediately as the team pushes to maintain momentum in the Eastern Conference playoff race.
Carlisle is expected to remain in contact with the team remotely while focusing on his recovery. The timeline for his return will depend on health clearances in accordance with NBA and medical protocols.
