Coach Daigneault, who played a pivotal role in the Thunder’s impressive rebuild and development of young talent over the past few seasons, landed just minutes ago at the team’s headquarters, where he formally informed the organization of his decision to step down. According to sources close to the situation, the decision was deeply personal and emotional, as Daigneault cited family reasons and the need to take an extended break from coaching responsibilities.
> “This was not an easy choice,” Daigneault reportedly said in a closed-door meeting. “But after long conversations with my family and team, I’ve decided it’s time to prioritize my health, my family, and explore new chapters away from the court.”
The resignation comes at a crucial moment, as the Thunder are viewed as one of the most promising young teams in the league, led by star guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, rising star Chet Holmgren, and a deep roster of elite prospects.
Thunder GM Sam Presti expressed both shock and understanding, saying,
> “Mark has been more than a coach—he’s been a leader, a visionary, and a culture-setter. While we are saddened by his departure, we fully support his decision and wish him the very best moving forward.”
The search for a replacement is expected to begin immediately, with assistant coaches and external candidates already under evaluation.
