Tragic Events: 3 are killed and 7 injured in a deadly bus accident involving the Kansas Jayhawks: Not yet reported

Lawrence, KS – April 16, 2025

In a heartbreaking and tragic turn of events, a charter bus transporting members of the Kansas Jayhawks’ athletic staff and support personnel was involved in a deadly crash late Tuesday night. Preliminary reports confirm that three individuals have lost their lives, and seven others sustained injuries—some of them critical.

The accident occurred just after 11:00 p.m. on Highway 75, roughly 40 miles south of Topeka. Officials say the bus, returning from an offseason team-building retreat, lost control on a winding stretch of road during inclement weather conditions. The cause of the crash is still under investigation, though early indicators suggest that slick roads and low visibility may have played a significant role.

Emergency crews arrived on the scene within minutes, aided by local volunteers and passing motorists who stopped to help. The names of the victims have not yet been released pending family notification.

University of Kansas Chancellor Douglas Girod issued a brief statement early Wednesday morning:
“Our hearts are broken. We are devastated by this tragic accident and are doing everything in our power to support the families and loved ones of those affected. The entire Jayhawk community is in mourning.”

Athletic Director Travis Goff added:
“The Kansas Jayhawks are more than just a team—we are a family. Today, we’ve lost a part of that family, and we will never be the same.”

Counseling services have been made available to players, staff, and students as the university community comes to terms with the loss. A candlelight vigil is expected to be held on campus in the coming days.

As of now, the identities of the deceased and injured have not been released, and more details will be shared as the investigation continues.
