President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin recently discussed organizing a series of hockey games between U.S. and Russian players during their phone call on March 18, 2025. According to the Kremlin’s summary, Trump supported Putin’s proposal to arrange games in both countries featuring players from the NHL and the KHL.
In response, over two dozen Ukrainian-American and Ukrainian-Canadian organizations have urged the NHL to reject any collaboration with the Russian Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). They argue that such games would offend NHL fans and communities of Ukrainian descent in North America, given Russia’s exclusion from international events following its invasion of Ukraine.
The NHL has stated that it was not involved in the discussions between Trump and Putin and is not aware of any ongoing plans. The league emphasized that it was not a party to these discussions and refrained from further comment at this time. This development occurs in the context of Russia’s continued exclusion from international hockey competitions due to geopolitical tensions, with bans extended through the 2025-26 season.
