TRAGIC REPORT:Plane carrying 17 people crashes minutes after take-off killing music star & 6 passengers off coast of Honduras

On March 17, 2025, a tragic aviation accident occurred off the coast of Roatán Island, Honduras, resulting in the deaths of at least 12 individuals, including renowned musician and politician Aurelio Martínez.

Incident Details

The aircraft, a British Aerospace Jetstream 41 operated by Lanhsa Airlines, departed from Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport on Roatán Island at nightfall, bound for Golosón International Airport in La Ceiba on the Honduran mainland. Shortly after takeoff, the plane made a sharp turn to the right and crashed into the Caribbean Sea approximately half a mile from the island’s coast.

Onboard were 15 passengers and two crew members. Among the passengers were several U.S. nationals, a French citizen, and two children. Rescue operations led to the recovery of five survivors, while 12 individuals were confirmed deceased.

Victims and Survivors

Among the fatalities was Aurelio Martínez, a prominent figure in the Garifuna music scene and the first Black congressman in Honduras. Martínez was celebrated for his contributions to preserving Garifuna culture and music.

Rescue Efforts

Emergency responders, including the Honduran Armed Forces, Fire Department, National Police, and the Red Cross, were promptly mobilized to the crash site. Rescue operations faced challenges due to rocky terrain and poor underwater visibility, complicating access to the wreckage.

Investigation

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Preliminary reports suggest the aircraft experienced an “apparent mechanical failure” shortly after takeoff. The Honduran government has established an Emergency Operations Committee to oversee the investigation and provide support to the victims’ families.
