In a shocking move, Montreal Canadiens coach Martin St. Louis has resigned from his position, effective immediately. The decision comes on the heels of the team’s disastrous performance against the Edmonton Oilers, which ended in a crushing defeat.
According to sources close to the team, St. Louis was furious with the team’s effort and felt that he had taken the team as far as he could. The final straw came when the Oilers scored a goal in the final minutes of the game, securing a 5-2 victory.
“I’m extremely disappointed in the way we played tonight,” St. Louis said in a statement. “We lacked passion, we lacked energy, and we lacked execution. I take full responsibility for the team’s performance, and I feel that it’s time for me to step aside.”
St. Louis’ resignation comes as a surprise to many, as he had been instrumental in turning the team around since taking over as coach. However, the team’s recent struggles and lack of consistency had raised questions about his future with the team.
The Canadiens organization has released a statement thanking St. Louis for his service and wishing him well in his future endeavors.
“We are grateful for the time and effort that Martin St. Louis has given to our organization,” said Canadiens General Manager, Kent Hughes. “We appreciate his passion and dedication, and we wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”
The search for a new coach is expected to begin immediately, with several candidates already being considered for the position.
In the meantime, assistant coach Alexandre Burrows will take over as interim head coach.
The Canadiens’ next game is scheduled for Saturday against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
