A devastating fire swept through Petco Park, the home stadium of the San Diego Padres, in the early hours of the morning, leaving multiple lives lost and a community in shock.
The blaze, which is believed to have started in the upper deck of the stadium, quickly spread throughout the facility, engulfing the stands, concourses, and suites. Firefighters responded rapidly to the scene, but the intensity of the fire made it difficult to contain.
“It’s a tragic day for our city,” said San Diego Mayor, Todd Gloria. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims and all those affected by this devastating fire.”
The San Diego Fire Department confirmed that multiple people lost their lives in the blaze, but the exact number of fatalities has not been released. Several others were injured, including firefighters who battled the blaze.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, but officials say it appears to be accidental.
Petco Park, which opened in 2004, is a beloved landmark in San Diego and a popular tourist destination. The stadium has hosted numerous high-profile events, including MLB playoff games, concerts, and festivals.
The San Diego Padres released a statement expressing their shock and sadness at the tragedy. “We are heartbroken by the news of the fire at Petco Park. Our thoughts are with the families of the victims and the entire San Diego community.”
The team has canceled all upcoming events at the stadium until further notice.
As the investigation into the fire continues, the community is coming together to support those affected by the tragedy. A fund has been established to support the families of the victims and the first responders who battled the blaze.
The city of San Diego will hold a vigil tonight at 6 PM to honor the victims and support the community.
