Ohio State University (OSU) has experienced significant events that have impacted both the campus and its surrounding community. These incidents include a roof collapse near the campus that injured 14 individuals and post-game celebrations that escalated into destructive behavior.

Roof Collapse Near OSU Campus Injures 14

On April 29, 2023, a house located near Ohio State University’s campus experienced a roof collapse, resulting in injuries to 14 people. The incident occurred during a gathering where an estimated 15 to 45 students were on the roof, which was not designed to support such weight. Columbus Division of Fire Battalion Chief Steve Martin stated that the roof was overloaded, leading to its failure. The injured individuals were transported to local hospitals in stable condition, with no life-threatening injuries reported.

Post-Game Celebrations Lead to Fires and Property Damage

Following Ohio State’s national championship victory on January 21, 2025, celebrations among students and fans escalated into destructive behavior. Revelers set nearly 90 fires, including burning couches and dumpsters, and tore down a goal post at Ohio Stadium. Columbus Police Chief Kim Jacobs noted that officers used tear gas and pepper spray to disperse crowds after repeated requests to clear the streets were ignored. The celebrations resulted in property damage and a few arrests, highlighting the challenges authorities face in managing large-scale spontaneous events.

These incidents underscore the need for increased awareness and preventive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of the OSU community during significant events.
