The Dallas Cowboys have officially announced the retirement of All-Pro guard Zack Martin, marking the end of an illustrious 11-year career that solidified his place among the franchise’s legends. Martin, 34, informed team owner and general manager Jerry Jones of his decision during a meeting on February 20, 2025.
Selected in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft, Martin’s impact was immediate and profound. Over his career, he earned nine Pro Bowl selections and was named a first-team All-Pro seven times, tying him with Hall of Famers Bob Lilly and Randy White for the most in team history. His seven first-team All-Pro honors also place him alongside Randall McDaniel and John Hannah for the most by a guard in NFL history.
Martin’s consistency and discipline were hallmarks of his tenure. Remarkably, he accrued only seven accepted holding penalties throughout his career, matching his number of first-team All-Pro selections. He started 162 games for the Cowboys, missing more than one game in a season only twice: in 2020 and 2024.
Beyond his on-field excellence, Martin’s leadership resonated deeply within the organization. Quarterback Dak Prescott reflected on Martin’s retirement, stating, “It’s hard to even fathom a locker room or huddle without Zack Martin… He’s the ultimate leader. He leads by example. He doesn’t have to say much, and when he does, you’re all ears.”
Martin’s decision to retire comes after a 2024 season limited by an ankle injury that required surgery. Despite his challenges, he continued to exemplify resilience and dedication, qualities that endeared him to teammates and fans alike.
As the Cowboys transition into a new era without one of their cornerstone players, the void left by Martin’s departure is palpable. His contributions have not only set a standard for offensive linemen in Dallas but have also paved the way for a likely future induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
The organization plans to honor Martin’s legacy with a ceremony at The Star in Frisco on March 5, celebrating a career that has left an indelible mark on the franchise and the broader NFL community.
