As a result, the Mets designated for assignment catcher Omar Narváez, who is batting .154 in 69 plate appearances this season. He is in the last season of a two-year, $15 million contract that has largely flopped; Narváez has a .745 OPS in 482 plate appearances (132 games) with the Mets.
Torrens will join the major-league roster and join Tomás Nido for the time being as Francisco Alvarez rehabs from a thumb injury. Alvarez played in his first rehab game Thursday, cranking a three-run home run and catching five innings.
The 28-year-old Torrens was batting .279/.339/.469 with five home runs and 19 RBI across 124 plate appearances for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The journeyman catcher has received MLB time with the San Diego Padres, Seattle Mariners and Chicago Cubs in parts of six seasons. He has a career .227/.289/.354 line with 19 home runs and 79 RBIs in 607 plate appearances. The Yankees signed him in January 2024.
