Eagles’Josh Sweat on free agency:Money’s important but i want to be in right

Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Josh Sweat is approaching free agency after a standout performance in Super Bowl LIX, where he recorded 2.5 sacks in the team’s 40-22 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. Reflecting on his future, Sweat emphasized the importance of both financial considerations and finding the right team environment. He stated, “Money’s important, sure, but I want to be in the right situation.”

Sweat’s journey with the Eagles began when he was selected in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft out of Florida State. Over the years, he has developed into a key contributor on the defensive line. In 2021, he signed a three-year, $42 million extension, which he played out, leading to his current free-agent status.

In the 2024 season, Sweat appeared in 16 games, recording 41 total tackles, nine tackles for loss, eight sacks, and two pass deflections. His consistent performance and recent Super Bowl showcase have positioned him as a top free-agent target. Agent Drew Rosenhaus remarked, “He clearly is one of the very top free agents.”

As Sweat navigates free agency, he has enlisted the representation of agents Drew Rosenhaus and Ryan Matha. While financial terms will play a significant role in his decision-making process, Sweat’s emphasis on finding the right fit underscores his desire to contribute effectively in a supportive environment. He expressed uncertainty about what the future holds but conveyed contentment with his current position, stating, “I don’t know what it looks like for me now, but I’m happy.”

The Eagles face pivotal decisions regarding their defensive lineup, with both Sweat and defensive tackle Milton Williams entering free agency and veteran defensive end Brandon Graham contemplating retirement. Sweat’s balanced perspective on financial and situational factors will be crucial as he evaluates potential opportunities in the upcoming free agency period.
