**Joy Division**

In 1976, Sumner co-founded the band Warsaw, which later became known as Joy Division. The band’s dark, atmospheric sound and introspective lyrics quickly gained a following. Joy Division released their seminal album, “Unknown Pleasures,” in 1979, which featured tracks like “Disorder” and “She’s Lost Control.” The band’s success was tragically cut short by the suicide of lead singer Ian Curtis in May 1980, just before a scheduled tour.

 

**New Order**

After Curtis’s death, Sumner and the remaining members of Joy Division formed New Order, integrating elements of post-punk with electronic and dance music. Their 1983 hit “Blue Monday” became one of the best-selling 12-inch singles of all time, showcasing their innovative blend of rock and electronic sounds.
